An experiment to investigate the relationship between movement and breath practices. At the centre of this workshop are the awareness of our own movement and breath patterns we unconsciously apply in our everyday lives.
Does my breath and body relate to each other? How is the movement of my breath? How does the rhythm of breath connect to the rest of the bodily sensations and emotions?
Do I know how to listen to my body? What is different when my body is in movement? How is the movement of my muscles, bones and joints? And how do they move through space?
Movement and breath together can be a way to investigate our perception of life. In this workshop, we will not only explore each of these phenomena but also the possibilities of their togetherness. We will use exercises and experiences to sense and listen to our body, touch our dance potential and get in touch with our breath in our mobile and immobile bodies.
We will play. We will awaken our senses by using them outside of their ordinary context. With the use of imagery and music while we will explore off the limits and discover self-organisation.
The process itself will give us opportunities for deeper levels of listening and potential psychical dialogues. Freedom dance, conscious diaphragmatic breathwork, oxygenated bodies, looking, seeing, feeling, relief, joy, comfort zones, and boundaries…
This workshop is appropriate for all who have interest in learning about ones self through experience.
Through this experience not only bodily happenings are sensed but also individuals might have meaningful inference and this can be motivational for their creative processes.
After her ballet education at the University of Istanbul Conservatory, for about 20 years Merve has never stopped dancing. Her interest always continued in the fields of dance, movement and body awareness. She studied Economics at the Koc University where she founded Contemporary Art Platform via which she ensured the continuity of dance classes. She received her Master Degree in Strategic Design at the Politecnico di Milano and worked on product and service systems with design thinking method.
During these periods besides contemporary dance, she practised contact improvisation, aerial acrobatics, experimental anatomy, yoga, breathing, meditation and Skinner Releasing in Turkey and abroad. While being focused on movement, performance art, improvisation, body awareness, psychical dialogue, experimental body and consciousness she continues her training in Body Therapy and Deep Tissue Massage Anatomy.
Merve is also co-founder of two food brands; Pina Olive Oil and Kombuçça. She continues sharing her experience by giving talks about food, conscious production and consumption. One of these talks is a TEDx Reset talk, 2017 “Listen to Earth”.
Currently, she has been offering “MOVING BREATH” [a workshop combining movement and breath practices] to corporates and groups with her ‘breath facilitator’ partner as well “movement and awareness” workshop targeted for children’s spiritual and social development with her psychologist partner.
In 2012, just after graduation [B.A. Koc University, P.G Dip. University of Arts London], she went to South Africa to be trained as a Breath and Life Coach in order to pursue her curiosity on the concept of self [who am I]. Her training included 160 hours of practical-theoretical knowledge and 2 years of travelling in South Africa, Netherlands, Switzerland and Turkey with the breath community that she was part of. During this period she worked as a facilitator, organiser and simultaneous translator of the trainer. She observed that the deepest learning for her occurred during the translation process and developed an interest in different levels of listening and their effects on communication. The dramatic changes that she experienced, combined with her focus on performative languages, came together in the founding of CIRCUIT Istanbul.
Since 2016 she has devoted her self to self-studies and alternative education centres to inquiry into body awareness, movement research and performance art, and found the opportunity to interact with specialists and academics she values. Bedirhan Dehmen [Physical Theatre course, Koc University], Michael Klein, Erin Manning [RICEonHydra] and Keith Henessey … Most recently, she completed the first part of Somatic Movement Teacher Training in Vienna.
Besides independently giving private breath sessions she offers, “MOVING BREATH” [a workshop combining movement and breath practices] to corporates and groups with her ‘movement facilitator’ partner. Her current breath and movement practice focuses on the nature of mind, change, and experimenting with new forms of dialogue, and investigates concepts of weirdness and provocation. She is currently a guest student at Koc University taking psychology classes.
